A new entry in the multiplayer shooter genre, Red Eclipse is a completely free and open source game based on the Cube 2 engine (another acclaimed freeware FPS game). Being open source, Red Eclipse is available for Windows, Linux and Mac and players can edit the game maps.

Red Eclipse is mainly a multiplayer FPS with a great graphics engine that can be tweaked in many ways, so that each player may run the game with a satisfying compromise between visuals and speed. The atmosphere is reminiscent of those of classic games such as Quake, Halo and Unreal, with great texture detail and fast gameplay. Players can also enter a single player mode against bots to test their skills before heading for the online battles. Game modes include Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Ball Striker and more.

The fighters in Red Eclipse are extremely agile, being able of the usual techniques, but also using swords at close combat, but also to run up walls and using a jetpack for flight.

Shaolin Monks is an action-adventure game that spans the events of Mortal Kombat II, starting with the aftermath of the first Mortal Kombat. The game centers on two members of the Shaolin Order, Liu Kang and Kung Lao, as they travel through the realms in an attempt to thwart Shang Tsung’s plans to dominate Earthrealm.The battle raged furiously on Shang Tsung’s island fortress in the Lost Sea, as the sorcerer watches from his throne. The Shaolin monk Liu Kang defeats Shang Tsung, and the giant Goro comes to his defense. With Goro distracting everyone else, Shang Tsung creates a portal to Outworld and retreats. Raiden appears afterwards and warns the remaining fighters to get off the island palace because it is collapsing into the sea.

Everyone, except Liu Kang and Kung Lao, evacuates and escape back to the Wu Shi Academy. Liu Kang and Kung Lao, however, have to fight their way to another portal to get to Wushi Academy. Upon arrival, they meet Baraka and the Tarkatan attacking the Wu Shi Academy. The Tarkatans are defeated, but Baraka captures Sonya Blade. Raiden confirms that Shang Tsung is trying to lure Liu Kang and his allies to Outworld where he can order his henchmen to attack them and bide his time for power. If successful, Shang Tsung will conquer Earth without winning a Mortal Kombat tournament, which is cheating.

The Shaolin Monks, Liu Kang and Kung Lao, journey through the nightmarish realm of Outworld to stop the sorcerer’s plot. They are guided by Raiden and assisted by Johnny Cage. Throughout their journeys, they are joined by a mysterious princess named Kitana, meet familiar foes and eventually save Sonya and stop Shang Tsung. But the sorcerer is not the only person who wants Earth; the Emperor of Outworld, Shao Kahn, wants Earth for his realm and he will stop at nothing until he gets it.

Being a firefighter is no easy task, since it involves risking your life everyday without any decent compensation… except for saving a person’s life, a feeling that is more valuable than any paycheck in the world. Sadly, videogames rarely honor such heroes and that is why Station 37 shouldn’t be overlooked.

Created in a great retro style, with excellent pixel art graphics, Station 37 puts us in the brave shoes of a firefighter who has to extinguish fires and rescue persons, all of this without the danger of real life. Your only ‘weapons’ are a fire extinguisher and an axe to break down doors and move around the crumbling buildings. We have to grab every civilian and bring them to safety, be it our chief or the fire truck outside.

Our hero is able to run and jump through the building, but also control the direction of the stream to reach fires in different directions. But beware, since the foam isn’t infinite and the player has to look for items to refill the extinguisher.

Station 37 is a cute and somewhat short freeware game that is worth a look.
